Counter Punch — Free Boxing Arcade Game

In Counter Punch, a punch thrown on its own is worth nothing. The only way to score is to defend an incoming attack correctly and then answer inside the window that opens afterwards. It is a game about reading patterns and about restraint.

About Counter Punch

The opponent throws set combinations, which are announced in advance as a short string of symbols. Each punch in the combination has to be defended with the right answer — block a head shot, slip left away from a right hand, slip right away from a left. Defend the whole combination cleanly and a counter window opens, roughly a third of a second wide, during which a single counter punch scores heavily.

Defending most of a combination is not enough. One wrong answer and the window never opens, which makes this the site's most demanding game for pattern reading — you have to hold a three or four punch sequence in mind while executing the first one. The combinations repeat across a round, so they are learnable, and the round ends when you have countered enough times or when your health runs out.

Because scoring depends entirely on countering and the counter is a single punch, accuracy is a much more meaningful statistic here than in any other game on the site. A run with eleven counters from eleven windows will comfortably beat one with twenty counters from forty.

Objective

Defend each combination cleanly, then counter inside the window. Five rounds.

How to play Counter Punch

  1. The opponent's combination is shown as a short string of symbols before it is thrown.
  2. Answer each punch correctly: block straight head shots, slip left or right away from hooks.
  3. Defend the whole combination without a mistake and a counter window opens.
  4. Press Counter inside that window to score. Outside it, nothing happens.
  5. Combinations repeat within a round, so watch and learn rather than guessing.

Boxing mechanics in Counter Punch

Announced combinations

Each combination is shown as a symbol string before it is thrown, so the challenge is execution rather than guesswork.

All-or-nothing defence

One wrong answer in a combination means no counter window at all, regardless of how much of it you defended.

Narrow counter window

Roughly a third of a second after a clean defence. It narrows in later rounds.

Counters are the only scoring

There is no free attack. Every point in the game comes from a counter.

Repeating patterns

Combinations repeat within a round, which makes learning them the intended route to improvement.

Tips and strategy

  1. Read the whole symbol string before the first punch lands. Reacting punch by punch works for twos and falls apart on fours.
  2. The most common failure is countering too early — the window opens after the last punch, not after the one you defended.
  3. Learn the round's combinations in the first thirty seconds by defending without countering at all. You lose points and gain the whole round.
  4. If you miss a defence, stop immediately and reset. There is no window coming, and inputs during a failed combination only cost stamina.
  5. Accuracy is a saved record here and it means more than it does elsewhere, because every counter is a deliberate decision rather than part of a flurry.

Difficulty

Rated Hard. Combinations reach four punches, the counter window narrows to roughly 0.2 seconds by round five, and partial defence is worth nothing at all.

Counter Punch — frequently asked questions

How do you score in Counter Punch?

Only by countering. Defend an entire incoming combination correctly and a window opens, and a counter thrown inside that window is the only thing in the game worth points.

What happens if I defend most of a combination?

Nothing. Defence is all-or-nothing — one wrong answer and no counter window opens at all.

How wide is the counter window?

About a third of a second in round one, narrowing to roughly 0.2 seconds by round five.

What do the symbols before each combination mean?

They show the punches that are about to be thrown and in what order, so you can plan your defensive answers in advance.

Do the combinations change?

They repeat within a round and change between rounds, which is what makes learning them a viable strategy.

Is it playable on touch?

Yes — slip arrows, a wide block button and a large counter button.
